Kahu: A Gentle Monster

The Kahu is a friendly creature native to tropical climates, especially islands in the ocean. It is an amphibious, dragon-like creature that is a protector of humans. It strides low to the ground, no taller than a large dog (not counting it's powerful wings). It is about 6 feet in length and has a bowl-shaped end to its tail. Within this bowl, the Kahu creates a powerful ball of fire and then uses its tail to catapult this ball of fire when it is faced with much larger predators, particularly dragons. It sleeps in underwater burrows typically unreachable for any other predators. It will hunt either underwater, on land, or in the air as it sees fit. The kahu are also known to protect people against dragons and islanders consider a kahu sighting to be a good omen. Their markings are not just for them to look fancy, but also to signal safety. When the bright pink markings are clearly visible, there is no present danger to the kahu, signaling to others of it's kind or even to humans that the area is safe. These markings appear to glow brightly underwater or at night. However, when danger is near, the markings fade to a deep blueish purple color similar to that of their slick, rubbery skin. And while they may be gentle with humans, they are fierce in battle, no matter how much larger the predator is.
