For this project we were tasked with create layouts for SJSU's Beethoven Newsletter.

History

The Beethoven Center at SJSU began a publication called The Beethoven Newsletter in 1986; in 1995 it changed its name to The Beethoven Journal. The Beethoven Journal is aimed at a wide range of Beethoven enthusiasts, including scholars, musicians, and general music-lovers. It includes some longer scholarly articles as well as general interest articles, book and CD reviews, and other reports. Until now it has appeared in print twice a year and circulates amongst around 400 members of the American Beethoven Society and another 150 individual subscribers.

The difficulties in this project were similar to what I faced in the Magazine Layout Exercise. The parameters were even more restrictive. The amount of text we had to work with was typically much greater than the images we were given and this was the same with each section in the publication.

To create visuals to work with I relied on pulling out key text, enlarging them, and playing with their layouts in a way that complimented the overall design and tone of the publication.

Difficult, but definitely good practice in working with a professional publisher.
