Illustrated magazine advert for a guitar delay pedal

The UK marketing and advertising agency, Mind Bomb, asked me to illustrate a brief for one of their client's advertising campaigns.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Delaylab is a new guitar effects pedal created by VOX Amplification combining thirty vintage and modern delay effects – and delivering perfect modelling of a carefully selected set of historically significant delay units that have fascinated guitarists through the years.

We’d like an illustration that can be used initially for print advertising, but may be incorporated into online advertising in the near future (e.g. website, email, banners etc.).

More information, product videos and sound bytes can be found on the official VOX Amps website:

CONCEPT

Set in a laboratory, a mad scientist, grinning triumphantly holds his new creation aloft. Main headline reads “It’s alive...”. Other elements in the illustration could include beakers containing floating parts of old delay pedals (a reference to our scientist’s inspiration).

We intend to incorporate the product photography into the hands of the scientist, so we will need to be mindful of the angle used. I will supply a suite of images available (it’s currently in production so getting hold of a physical unit to photograph is proving difficult).

I’ve suggested that we could try to incorporate the headline into the graphic if possible as a nod to the genre – I think that the composition/pencil sketch will give us an indication if this will work.
Genre/influence: Vintage sci-fi/horror-esque.

In the word’s of our client:
“It should look grainy like an old color newspaper combined with a Vintage Sci-Fi or Vintage horror look.”

Concept sketch 1.
Concept sketch 2.
After viewing the concepts, the client asked for a more serious scientist character design (less mad professor) and asked for old guitar whammy pedal models to be scattered about the lab. They liked the composition and colour scheme from concept 1.

So I sketched this first draft out.
After the pencil work was signed off by the client, I scanned the pencil work into Adobe Illustrator then inked in the line work.
Then began experimenting with textures, shade and type to achieve the vinatge/ retro / sci-fi horror look.
Flat areas of colour were blocked in in Photoshop.
Shading and highlights were added in Photoshop.
The final layout design and type was produced by MindBomb. The illustrated advert was then sent to print!
