Double-Helix T-Shirt Design – ASHI

This t-shirt design represents the mission and history of the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI), using a meticulous typography treatment in a cohesive, contemporary design. Originally founded as the American Association of Clinical Histocompatibility Testing, ASHI has been focused on the research and testing of immunology and genetics since 1974 as a not-for-profit association of clinical and research professionals.

It was crucial that all t-shirt recipients felt represented in the design: immunologists, geneticists, molecular biologists, transplant physicians and surgeons, pathologists, and technologists. A double-helix DNA strand was chosen as the key design element to reflect the importance of genetics and DNA to the ASHI community.

The years and locations listed on the left strand of the double-helix (1975–1983) are the first 9 annual meetings as the American Association of Clinical Histocompatibility Testing. Switching to the right DNA strand marks the association’s transition to the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics and its 36 (and counting!) successful annual meetings since (as of 2019). The text at the bottom of the right strand reaffirms ASHI’s mission: advancing the science, education, and application of immunogenetics and transplant immunology.
