Hope Children's Home's profile

Parental Rights and Voluntary Placement

For more than five decades, Hope Children's Home has provided a loving, safe home and high-quality education for children and teens in New Mexico and Florida. Hope Children's Home accepts youth up to 18 years of age. Children may remain in the organization’s care temporarily until their families are stabilized.

Parents may need to relinquish day-to-day custody of their children for a myriad of reasons. Illness, severe financial hardship, or out-of-control behavioral problems may result in parents making the difficult choice to place their children into residential facilities.

This arrangement is known as a voluntary placement. Under a voluntary placement contract, parents retain their parental rights and can make major decisions for their children, including matters like health care.

However, the residential facilities will set parameters for daily life, such as the children’s curfew and expected behaviors. While the children are in the care of the residential facility, the parents may visit them. If the parents can demonstrate the ability to care for their children, the placement agreement may be lifted.
