Inspiration
Photographers:
Corrine day (1962-2010) https://www.corinneday.co.uk
- Was a British fashion photographer
- Brought a documentary feel to fashion photography
- Influenced the style of photography from the 90s and is still continuing to influence photography today
- Formed long and close relationships with her models
Day has been an inspiration to my own work as I love her simplicity, most of her images are very soft and subtle with neutral colours which I would like to project on to my own work. I also think throughout her images you can see her connection with her models and how at ease they are shooting with her, this is something I inspire to do to get the most out of my shoots (also recommended by guest speaker - Andy Greenachre)
Tyler Mitchell (b. 1995) https://www.tylermitchell.co
- American photographer and filmmaker based in Brooklyn
- Made history as the first black fashion photographer to shoot a cover for American vogue
- Published regularly in fashion magazines, commissioned by fashion houses and exhibited at top institutions
- Closely watched up-and-coming talents in image making today
One aspect of Mitchell's work that has inspired my own is his use of sheets within the images, I feel as if it makes the backdrop more 3D and gives a very natural feeling. As I am shooting from home it will also allow me to create a mini studio using the sheet as a backdrop.
Bill Cunningham (1929-2016)
- American fashion photographer for New York Times
- Know for candid and street fashion photography
- Would ride his bike everyday through the streets of New York with his camera
- Worked for the New York Times for 40 years
Cunningham's work has been an inspiration to my own work as he was a fashion photographer working for a newspaper supplement. The main thing that has influenced my work was that he shoot a section called 'on the street', which I have shown below, where it would be based on one subject e.g wearing blue. I would like to project this in my shoot as my article and images will be based on wearing neutrals.

I love the slight colour tinge on Andy's images but still keeping the images neutral
