Velvet Underground, a 1960s cult

This is a book I made for my Typography II Class at Pratt that is centered around the Velvet Underground.
I decided to retrace their whole story, from 1964 to 1970. The goal was also to show how New York City was during that time; Lou Reed's lyrics are famous for their beautiful insight on the city.
The typeface used is Serifa, a slab-serif typeface made by Adrian Frutiger. I chose it because it was made in the 1960s, which coincided with my theme. It has various weights, which is ideal for different levels of information.
A black cover with the initials of the band printed in black.
Signature Spine (sewed by hand)
The book is divided by years, each year is chapter.
The paper used is newspaper print.

At first you have a description of the band members, in order to really understand how it all came together.
Each chapter is color-coded.
6 colors were chosen, colors that would allow the black and white photography to really pop when overlapped.
A series of photographs and posters that were all chosen one by one and scanned from books.
Most of these photographs are exclusive and really give a feel of how the band is underground.
There are parts in the book that are dedicated to songs of the Velvet Underground, with the lyrics and the story behind the song. A great plus for every Velvet Underground fan.
The last page of the book is a collage that I made from photographs that I gathered for the book.
A video showcasing the pages of the book.
While working on this book, I created a poster representing the connections between 1960s icons.
See it here.
