Victor Hugo’s The Alphabet is a Source

Victor Hugo’s The Alphabet is a Source

The Brief: To design a limited edition Livre d’Artiste for Victor Hugo’s 'The Alphabet is a Source'. The text must be set in both the original French text and the English translation.

My Solution: Along with many of Hugo’s works, the text has been translated into English. Both languages share an alphabet and also many words. The Alphabet is a Source shows Hugo’s keen interest in the alphabet and it was of interest to me that his observations can be interpreted across languages.

I used a combination of translucent and opaque papers to display the different languages intertwined with one another. The words that appear in both languages are only printed once and are shared between the texts. I adapted a hand written style for these words to echo the diaries and notes Hugo referenced to produce the text.
