Architectural Storage Units Inspired by Memories of Korean Apartment Buildings
현대인이 살고 있는 가장 흔한 주거의 유형, 아파트는 짧은 세월 동안 다양한 모습으로 변화해왔습니다. Z세대는 아파트에서 나고 자라 아파트 건축이 친숙한 아파트 키드이지만, 아파트 건축붐의 시작인 7-80년대 당시 집의 건축적 특징과 생활상은 지금과 많이 달라서 도심 속의 오래된 건물들을 만날 때면 아주 낯설게 느껴지기도 합니다. 스튜디오유니테는 이러한 빛바랜 아파트의 시간들을 돌아봅니다. 사람들의 기억 속에 남아 있는 아파트 이야기를 찾고, 가까운 일상에서 다시 기억할 수 있도록 일상 제품으로 재해석합니다. 합판, 폐종이, 시멘트를 섞은 재료로 70년대 아파트 건축의 대표적 유형을 닮은 모듈 구조를 짓습니다. 각 모듈들은 마치 아파트의 층처럼 쌓여서 책상 위 작은 물건들을 위한 집이 되어줍니다. 아파트의 효시라고 알려진 르 코르뷔지에의 모더니즘 건축, '유니테 다비타시옹'의 '유니테(유닛)'에서 스튜디오 이름을 따왔습니다. 희미해지는 한 시대의 풍경들을 기억하고 가치 있게 여기는 것, 스튜디오유니테가 일상 제품에 담은 이야기입니다.
Apartment complexes are the most preferred housing type in Korea. The Korean apartment phenomenon stemmed from a public housing project initiated in the 1960-70s to accomodate the urban population. In this period, Seoul began to expand its city boundaries, diverse apartment types were experimentally constructed, however afterwards, apartments were standardized into large-scale, flat-type complexes due to demands and economic efficiency. But still some of the early apartment complexes still remain in our cities, evoking personal memories and collective memories of the city’s rapid growth. Studio Unité builds small storage units inspired by these early apartment complexes. The everyday objects, stackable units, made of plywood, discarded paper, and cement, function as a tower for your desk objects. We share some of the historical, cultural values hidden in our homes that are starting to fade away. Our name Unité is named after Le Corbusier’s modernist residential housing, Unité d'Habitation(Housing Unit).
