UYAPHI

The name of this series was inspired by one of the conversations I had with one of the taxi drivers I met. I was asking for permission to take a photo of their taxi but the driver did not hear me or dismissed what I said and he asked the question “Uyaphi”, which translates to ‘where are you going? ’ in English. “Uyaphi” is a common question that most taxi drivers ask /use to help customers who are lost and who are looking for the correct taxi. It was in this moment my interest with taxis started. This body of work is in conversation with Mario Soares artwork titled ‘Even People of Johannesburg’. He believes that the use of the road in his work is a metaphor of describing the concept of growing up, travelling and migration. This was when I thought it would be great opportunity to present my body of work in conversation to his.
