Happy 80th Birthday to Fantasia!!!

FUN FACTS ABOUT FANTASIA -

• ORIGINALLY RELEASED AS A LIMITED-RUN ROADSHOW - 13 roadshows were held across the United States, starting at the Broadway Theatre in NYC. At each location they had 2 screenings each day, seat reservations booked in advance, printed programs, and a 15 minute intermission.

• PREMIERED AT THE SAME THEATRE AS STEAMBOAT WILLIE - Describing it as “the greatest thrill of [Mickey’s] acting career,” Walt said that Fantasia‘s debut took place in "the same theatre where he had made his first appearance as a ragged shoeless Mouse [more than] 10 years before.”

• THE FIRST FILM TO USE STEREOPHONIC SOUND - Walt Disney wanted the live sound sensations of a concert hall, so the imagineers developed a new sound recording system they called Fantasound. The set-up for this involved 90 speakers around the theater.

• WALT WANTED A 4D EXPERIENCE - Walt wanted to "stimulate the audience’s senses" with fans blowing perfume into the theater during The Nutcracker Suite, and the smell of gunpowder during The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. He also liked the idea of having a portion of the concert shown using 3D projection, which was limited to black-and-white imagery at the time.
