Second Nature: Center for Independent Living
Biophilia is the concept of the Second Nature space. Exposure to nature has shown that physiological and psychological restoration speeds up, fatigue reduces, and motivation increases. With the help of nature, the users of this space will feel safe, comfortable, and at ease so that learning will become second nature.
One feature of the Second Nature Center for Independent Living is the sensory gym. The sensory gym will aide in helping the users with ASD break out of their comfort zones through the various textures and colors in the space that will stimulate them.
In the basement level, we have created little cubbies in the wall for users to go into when they are feeling overwhelmed. Studies have shown that deep compression for those with ASD are important and can help them decompress.
Another feature we've included are these mock apartments, which we designed to look like actual homes on the outside for more visual context once they go out into the real world.  In there apartments, the users will be able to learn how to properly make a bed and clean, allowing for a smooth real life transition.
Large windows allow for ample daylight, especially during the winter months. Users will also be able to take advantage of the beautiful views over the Rochester city.
The residential space shown here is of the fourth floor loft, created to accommodate those who are in a wheelchair, use a walker, or those who simply want a more open plan.
