Instructions; Quit Smoking

"How to Quit Smoking"

In the project, we were asked to create a clear set of instructions
that involve showing someone "how to" do something in the most
unusual way possible.

I have created a package to be bought by friends or family, to encourage
someone to quit smoking. Within the box, it contains instructions and some
of the items needed to complete the instructions successfully.
It's a method that has become outdated due to what we now know about
the effects of chemicals within cigarettes when smoked, so the design style
has been carefully chosen to fit the dated feeling of the method.

Whilst talking with others and exploring different ways of trying to quit smoking,
I discovered a method which is far more severe than others. After learning
about this, it's simply a method based on the simple theory of:

"Coniditoned taste aversion"
Conditioned taste aversion also known as Garcia effect, is an example of classical conditioning or Pavlovian conditioning. Conditioned taste aversion occurs when a subject associates the taste of a certain food with symptoms caused by a toxic, spoiled, or poisonous substance. Generally, taste aversion is caused after ingestion of the food causes nausea, sickness, or vomiting. The ability to develop a taste aversion is considered an adaptive trait or survival mechanism that trains the body to avoid poisonous substances before they can cause harm. This association is meant to prevent the consumption of the same substance (or something that tastes similar) in the future, thus avoiding further poisoning.

It seems after speaking to others who have experienced this themselves,
they weren't a willing participant. It was used by their parents to try and stop
them from smoking any further - but the instruction pack does suppose that
someone may be brave enough to willingly partake in the instructions themselves.
As it's such an extreme method, I feel like it should include subtle humour to try
and tone down the severity.

It was a fun little project! I can't see this hitting the
shops any time soon - But I hope you enjoy.

Being clear was very important for this set of instructions. I needed to makesure text wasn't overbearing.

I decided to slowly fade out the negative connections to smoking when progressing through the instrctions.

As the instructions were not bound together, I made sure that the order of the cards was clear by adding the highlighted number at the bottom and the cigarette that slowly gets shorter as you progress.

I wanted to show the way the box works exactly -
I felt it was a good idea to include the cigarettes and lighter because it could then be bought for someone to help them quit and would ensure they have enough cigarettes to ensure success.

The package would theoretically be priced considerably higher than the average price of the cigarettes, therefore ensuring that it would be bought for the correct purpose, rather than just buying it to get a cheap packet of cigarettes.
