Traditional romanian masks

When I created this series I was inspired by traditional Romanian masks from various regions of the country.

People wore them to mimic the chaos needed to renew time. They no longer suffered because the masks hid them from the spirits.

It was once a magical act that aimed to make the sun start to rise in the sky, after December 21 (when it is the solstice) this fact brought abundance and well-being to the community.

The texts that accompany the masks are fragments of various greetings that are said about the new year and funny popular expressions used frequently during the winter.

I chose to keep the Romanian version of the expressions because the English translation would affect their true meaning.
