Brochure Design: Asian Representation in Hollywood

BROCHURE DESIGN

Finding narratives that feature racial minorities in Hollywood has been a challenge. For decades, white men dominated film and television with stories created to cater to Caucasians or stories featuring offensive representation of BIPOC individuals. It wasn’t until only a few years ago we received empowering stories for the Black and Asian communities with films like Black Panther (2018) and Crazy Rich Asians (2018). I believe that stories matter, which is why I chose to create a brochure that discusses a topic that is important and necessary: Asian representation in Hollywood.

Storytelling is a powerful tool that can empower so many individuals, which is why I added an image of a young child watching television on the front page of the brochure. I added elements that depict films, such as cinema tickets, roll film with movie posters, and photos of Asian American actors in Hollywood to fit the overall theme of my topic.

I did face a few challenges while navigating my way through Adobe InDesign for this project. When I first designed my brochure, I made a mistake with my layout, and I also made various changes with my text to fix overrides. I also found myself readjusting the layout of my brochure quite frequently to create the mockups.

The texts in this brochure are “Hollywood Doesn’t Fully Represent Asian Americans Yet” written by Bettina Makalintal from Vice and “‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Kicked Down the Door. Now Asian Americans Are Fighting To Stay in the Room” written by Andrew R. Chow from Time.
