Ästhetik & Freiheit

This student project in the area of editorial design was created as a team effort by Mariam Ibrahim and Sarah Hauffe.

The book “On the Aesthetic Education of Man” is Schiller’s most detailed reflection on the subject of aesthetics. This zine follows Schiller’s journey in search of beauty, delving into complex relationships between necessity and freedom, sensuality and reason, imagination and cognition, arbitrariness and law, nature and culture.
“Ästhetik & Freiheit” forms an exciting exchange between fragments of Schiller’s reflections and our own thoughts, in a visual typographic context. To underline the change of perspective and perception between our interpretation and Schiller’s texts we placed our thoughts upside-down, which entices the reader to engage with the zine itself.
This zine intends to help us discover what we understand as beautiful, what freedom has to do with it and why aesthetics has an influence on society, politics and the world.
