Office:Atelier is a boutique architectural design practice founded by Nicholas Foulcher and Ian Wyn Owen. Both academics at the University of Newcastle, as well as practising architects, the duo, have created a unique practice that balances both research and commercial projects. Long time friends of the studio, Nic and Ian approached Shorthand to create a brand identity that played on this distinctive approach.

Taking inspiration from this duality, our solution was a to develop a unique wordmark that gave both words in the name a fitting personality. ‘Office’, referencing the research side of the practice is presented in a serious sans-serif font, while ‘Atelier’ (french for artist’s studio) contrasts in a quirky custom typeface. Supporting this is an unexpected colour palette that is a bold turn away from the stark black and white typical of their industry.
