The goal of this project was to create three different book covers that reflect the life and work of the designer Jan Tschichold. The front and back of the covers were to be 7" x 10" with a 1" x 10" spine. We were allowed a maximum of three pms colors per cover. Check out my dropmark to see my progress.

The goal of this design was contrast and simplicity. Jan believed the best was to create contrast was with size, therefore I made his name large and everything else small. I chose black type on a white background to create a sense of simplicity, since that is something he favored. I made his name big, red, and repeating to represent the confidence he had in himself as well as to create visual interest. It also has serif and sans serif type as an ode to both parts of his career.

The main goal of this design was to serve as a nod to Jan's belief that a good way to make type more visually interesting is to make it diagonal. Once again I used type size to create contrast, and serif and sans serif types to be representative of both parts of his career. I chose to make this cover red to represent his background in Bauhaus. I left all of the spine and most of the back cover bare because for the first part of his career Jan was greatly against ornamentation.

The goal of this cover was to emphasize Jan's love of using guides. Therefore, his name, the authors, and "His Life, Work and Legacy" are all on the same invisible vertical guide. Yellow and black were chosen to create contrast. The extra bold and thin type were also chosen for contrast.

The black line going throughout the whole cover is to represent Jan's straightforwardness. It also is represent native of his love for guidelines. "Master" and "Typographer" are also on the same alignment because of this.
The back cover is very minimal since Jan preferred minimalistic designs. The black line serves to add visual interest as well as act as a guide line.
