The Old City Charm

The Old City charm

Numerous visits to the Old city by pretext of sourcing gorgeous traditional fabrics or even unusual materials for College projects, Study of a space and human interaction or simply just immersing oneself in mysterious yet organised array of lanes.  It was not only the characteristic historic essence of the place that but the warm and congenial temperament of the local inhabitants that sprinked an added charm to this Locale, an Urban archaeological entity on the Eastern bank of the Sabarmati River called the Old city.

The presence of institutions belonging to many religions (Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Judaism) makes the Social fabric of Ahmadabad an exceptional and unique example of multicultural coexistence.

The architecture of the Sultanate period monuments exhibits a unique fusion of the multicultural character and an important interchange of human values. the old city’s very rich domestic wooden architecture with its distinctive  “pols” (gated residential main streets), and khadkis (inner entrances to the pols) are characteristic components that shape the identity of the Old city.  The Pols illustrating an outstanding example of shared public space.

The picture series are nothing but an appreciation and a tribute to the Old city.
