Sitting Bull Crystal Cave

History is an adventure.
Just like a tour at Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns, I made history into an adventure with my design for this dogtooth spar crystal-covered Black Hills destination. One T-shirt design takes influence from tradtional Black Hills Native American weaving and quilt-making, while the other design pulls from the original painted signs from the cave’s opening in 1934 as a tourist experience. To make the shirts even better, they were discharge-printed, allowing huge designs without compromising their breathability (and suitability for outdoor adventure).
Sitting Bull Cave is famous for its huge dogtooth spar crystals. I wanted to abstract this into a T-shirt design.
The second T-shirt design was inspired by our shop's old hand-painted signage. I sketched an update.

In the summer of 2011, Sitting Bull Cave needed some extra revenue to add to our regular ticket and giftshop sales. The solution our owners came up was creative: installing a “gemstone mining” feature, in which children (and adults) could sort through pre-packaged “gemstone mining rough” to find fossils and gems. The physical execution of the mining feature, done by a local carpenter, was stunning. I was lucky enough to get the job of designing and applying signage to the tank and sleuses, and to create corresponding signage for the giftshop components.
