Kaleidaflect

Kaleidaflect is a student project aimed at bringing tourism to Warwick Triangle in the heart of Durban CBD South Africa. Inspired by the colourful cultures and people in this marketing district, the project aimed to open up a dialogue about street trade and the sharing of new cultures in a world otherwise unknown in the city.

Many of the people working in this district have been doing so for generations. They earn an income to sustain their families and have a multitude of cultures to share. The aim of this project was to bring more people to support these businesses and encourage the sharing of new cultures for people who otherwise would never have visited the area. I went on a tour of the districtย with Markets of Warwick where I got to engage with vendors in Warwick Triangle and learn more about their business and daily life. It was fascinating to see the vibrant cultures and learn that the negative perceptions of the area were keeping many visitors away. The dirt and grime could not hide the kaleidoscope of cultures on display.

I wished to create a 360ยบย campaign to raise awareness for the business district and bring potential consumers to shop in the district and learn about the various cultures. I wished to dispel negative mindsets associated with crime in the area and to rather showcase the colourful cultures that flourish and can be learned. The many bright cultures and colours of the business district from fresh produce to fashion reminded me of a kaleidoscope which inspired the name Kaleidaflect. To see a cross over of cultures and reflect on learning about cultures other than our own.
