Before and After: Matador Records Logo Project

Before and After:
Matador Records Logo Project
The process for re-designing this logo from my student work was to make my original design cleaner, simple and appropriate to the brand personality of an independent/alternative rock label.
The original logo while fun, the mark of the logo visually read as a bat-like symbol and didn't effectively communicate the brand personality for the record company. In addition, the font Trade Gothic Display Base 2 paired with the logomark lacked cohesion with each element. This resulted in the final product being visually mismatched and confusing.
In the process of the logo re-design, I sketched 12 different concepts for the logo redesign. Each concept started with the letterform M from the original logo. With each sketch I explored how each different concept fit the company brand’s message.
After selecting the concept sketch that was visually appealing and appropriate to the brand, I brought over the design into Adobe Illustrator to convert into a vector format, while converting the design I saw that there was another concept to create by combining another element from a rejected logo concept for this.  Taking this element made the logo a much stronger final product.
To resolve the font issue for the logo, I selected the font Bebas Neue Regular for the company name of Matador Records within the logotype. Bebas Neue Regular is a font that pairs nicely with the sharp edges of the logomark and gives the logo a clean modern look that is versatile for various applications.
To conclude, the redesign of the logo for Matador Records is simpler, cleaner and more modern while retaining the essence of its edgy rock and roll brand.
