Photocopy Experiments

I wanted to experiment with a different way of making images and thought it would be interesting to see what I could create with the photocopier. I wanted to play with the idea of gender and how women can feel oppressed by gender stereotypes and having to try to conform to society's view on beauty. I wanted to create the sense of being trapped and uncomfortable and felt that manipulating the face by adding extra pressure to certain areas of the face on the scanner could create this idea. I felt like these were successful as a first attempt and want to continue to experiment with this way of making as I like the uniqueness of it and feel as though it is a good way to help express my ideas.

I created the image above by moving the face as it scanned. This created a distorted effect and elongated the different facial features. As the motion wasn't smooth, it created this glitch like effect which I thought was very interesting.

This was perhaps my favourite scan of them all as I liked the use of the hands as it gives the impression of fighting back and trying to break free of these gender stereotypes. If I were to make more images using this method, I would make sure the hands are completely clean as the paint and the plaster on the bottom hand could be distracting and take away from the message I am trying to send.
