Proximity Island: A Nomadic Future

Proximity Island: A Nomadic Future
CONCEPT: Ocean will be the next continent for dwelling and production. A nomadic life is proposed for the better use of ocean environment. The depth of ocean is another dimension provided for unique experience in terms of farming and harvesting.

PERCEPTION: As individual platforms, these oil rigs were artificial islands for the settlement of human and marine life; Considering all platforms together, they serve as a broader network that supports an ocean nomadic life.

DESIGN: The oil rig is conceived as an empty industrial vessel for the further use of living and tourism. One of the platform serve as rack that takes container living units from the ocean liner; another platform is carved by a spiral stair to allow people enter the underwater museum through walking into water. Part of industrial remains would not only contribute to the exchange of cargos but also remind visitors of the past human activity on the oil rig.

ACTIVITIES: The proximity island has one oil rig to accommodate temporary living, another one as marine museum, which constructs a continuous experience from above the sea level to underwater space. For long term residents, they fish, foster and harvest seaweed, maintain operation of the platform; For short stay tourists, they explore the industrial remains,  explore the underwater museum, interact with marine life.

ACCESS: The twin platforms are connected by two bridges for planar movement. Elevators and stairs provides access through different levels, including underwater observatory. Each platform has an helicopter pad. A low deck is for the docking of large ocean liner; A series of dock under oil rigs offers the access of small boats.

FUTURE IDENTITY: The proximity island will be the inhabitation of marine life in the long run. In the short run, it grants people a chance to reevaluate their relationship with ocean life and environment. It is not only an anchor point stand in ocean but also a turning point of an coexisting condition that is upcoming.
