Informal Urban Settlements

Location: Frazer Town, Bangalore, India

The aim of this project was to study and understand a slum settlement through documentation, observation and analysis of the conditions, issues and lifestyles of the people through a mapping of the site. The approach to the design intervention involved addressing the aspirations and necessities of the inhabitants of the slum. The design approach was multi-fold. The intervention not only had to improve and add value to the life of inhabitants, it had to be sustainable and inexpensive in terms of its construction and maintenance.
A settlement of over 400 houses of both temporary and permanent nature in the heart of the city, the unconventionally sloped site is nestled amongst the higher economy  areas of Jaymahal, Cook Town and Benson Town, in close proximity to the city’s cantonment area. The challenge was to navigate this complex self sustained ecosystem created by the communities residing there.
