Social Stories (TM) as an interactive learning tool
- A digital meeting between interaction design and special pedagog
There is a need for aids to groups with communication difficulties, and a strong need to inform about the actual existence of these groups. Through work and education I have experienced that we humans are not always so skilled at communication, and we are often scared of the unknown. Many get insecure and withdraw in confrontation with that outside our comfort zone. This creates isolation for minorities and those who lack language. Out society is created for the "great many", and universal design has a long way to go.

This product and tool is created with the intent of being a aid to children and youngsters who have communication difficulties, with focus on creating dialog.

Prototype:
First off: A social story informs about when and where something is to happen, who is involved and why it happens. The tool is supposed to explain difficult terms, feelings, expectations and wishes. The goal is to contribute with understanding and knowledge, which can be of great help in the scary meeting of "something new".

The goal is for the person to acquire an insight in other persons thoughts, feelings and intention through the stories perspective sentences.
Interaction design.
Here I worked with user-centered design (UCD) as a main approach, and have in development and evaluation worked with Participatory Design (PD) and Genius Design (GD).

I chose these approaches because this is a product that has to be developed with and for the users. The product had to be repetitively evaluated with users to get continuous feedback. My background also allowed me to use my own knowledge.

To make a understandable product I worked with understanding the needs of users by including them in the whole process. Therefore have usability and user experience played a key part in this project.

In addition have cognitive frameworks and theories been used continuously. This is vital in the development of informative design to see how the user behaves.
- Attention
- Perception
- Memory
- Learning

Cognitive frameworks have a lot in common with universal design and universal approach, which is something I can not distress the importance of.

Methods and techniques used in this project:
Brainstorming, thought maps.
Self Research
Moodboards
Online questionares
Observation in natural habitat
Methods of evaluation:
3 of Don Norman's Design Principles:
- Visibility
- Feedback
- Constraints

Usability.
Expert evaluation
User evaluation
Crowdsourcing: A/B and 5-second test.
