Ben Higgins's profile

Furniture Design

An industrial themed sideboard, part of a medium cost dining range.
A project completed on placement at the Virtual Works, a furniture company focussing on low to medium cost, high volume furniture for the domestic  UK furniture market.
An analysis of existing industrial themed furniture, including the clients existing solution - Calia Sideboard (top right).
Details that make the design stand out:
matte/ or even unfinished metals
sturdy legs, or frame structure
angled legs, to show strength.
Flat, minimal handles usually metal or inset wood.
I can change and combine these details to form my own design.
Product Positioning diagram used to identify market and approximate price point - this informs the complexity of the design. The manufacturing and materials choice must be compatible with this price point.
For furniture, stretching is the primary way of developing a design language of the product.

CAD models based on sketch ideas and used to experiment and compare different finishes.
Drawers on the left slightly different from usual - a small stand out detail.
Composite legs provide stand out feature.
Further accents added through metal lipping.
Flat handles and angled legs acknowledge existing product trends.
American white oak finish chosen for its wide grain giving it a raw, industrial feel.
Metal lipping is too material intensive - instead this detail is captured with a more premium groove mounted profile handle.
Also provided the client with engineering drawing to BS8888 standard.
