From the ocean

In nature there is no such things as waste, everything that is produced serves to develop other organism.

As a designer I strive to bring to the world new things that positively impact people and
with that I feel comes a big responsability to make things that respect our planet.
This project is an opportunity to combine my design skills with a circular mindset.

I hope this can inspire you to see things with a different eye.
Let's all be a bit more mindful about what we put out there :)

'' Let's start looking around us
and reconsider what we consider waste. "

Start with shells.
Ask your favorite seafood local restaurant, they usually have plenty and they end up in the trash.

Crush it !
Time to turn the shells into small particules so we can work with them.

Find the recipe that works for you.

You might need to experiment with different proportions depending on the consistency and desired result.
Remember to write down proportions for each try.
Adding natural pigment.
It is possible to mix with pigment to colour the material.

Design work for 3D printing.

With all your previous experiments you should have a better idea of the properties of the materials.
Keep in with mind that the piece with shrink in size due to evaporation during the drying process.

You are ready to make your final piece.
I found that linseed oil works well for an easier demoulding.

The result.

The bio material is used first by protecting the clay pot during the transport and later serves at home as a base.

 Surface finish.
You can carefully sand down the surface to reveal the shells details.
Outcome and reflections.

I got better at failing often and bringing the lessons to improve on the next try.
I Improved my understanding of moulding principes and working with the constraints of a new material.
I developed my understanding about circular economy, reusing waste and using local natural ressources.
