The Origin of species

DESIGN CONCEPT

Charles Darwin’s book ‘On the Origin of Species’ is widely considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology.
I wanted to bring a contemporary twist to the design while paying homage to the original book. I decided to adopt a line drawn style combined with solid colours and modern typography. The minimalist colour palette builds a strong theme for each book. The jacket cover shows the evolution of animals at a quick glance.

The design for ‘The Origin of Species’ was inspired by creatures from all habitats - water, land and air. The simple blocked shape of a fish overlayed on top of the sketch is the highlight of the book cover, showcasing the evolution of species, which is the major key point of the book. For the cover of ‘The Voyage of the Beagle’, I chose the Beagle and the Galapagos turtle as the main element. The fossil shells represent a part of Darwin’s journey and discovery. The handwritten elements give the look of a journal. The blue ocean wave was shaped based on Darwin’s routh map which represents the turbulent journey and difficulties Darwin
encountered on his adventures.
