One of the biggest trends in sports graphic design is the ability to accurately take a player from team "A" and put them on team "B". An accurate jersey swap contains an incredible amount of fine detail the casual sports observer probably won't pick up on, like helmet style and jersey patches. Each swap poses its own unique challenges that must be solved with a variety of techniques. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to creating a professional swap. 

Personally, I believe a well-done jersey swap shows mastery of many elements of Adobe Photoshop including -- but not limited to -- masking, perspective, warping, puppet warping, distorting, scaling, color matching, and lighting matching.
