‘The Dance of Time’
This piece is about the beauty of weightlessness and taking the time to observe it as it is. To appreciate a small moment. Often small moments like these and the small details that we forget to pay attention to are incredibly moving. There is so much life and beauty around us.
Weightless material has been my biggest source of inspiration this year for my work and I have explored ways of capturing the beauty of movement through this. There is something about the way it can be shaped so beautifully by the falling from the force of gravity and the movement of wind. The shapes and textures that are created are unique and hold a sense of being. Its own moment of creation and its own moment of movement. It becomes a dance of flow, and this natural performance can be truly breathtaking if you see it. My inspiration for this piece has formed from the ‘American Beauty’ Thomas Newman film – ‘the plastic bag scene’. I have always been deeply moved by this scene because it made me feel an unexplainable feeling of appreciation and connection to all things. The plastic bag from this scene appeared to be dancing in the wind as if it had its own being and meaning in the world. Through this piece I have tried to capture a similar moment with this material. I have chosen slow-motion for the time-lapse with the motive of slowing down time for the chance to see the beauty that is missed and to really be present with this moment. I conducted this by using light material tied to a large fan facing upwards. This allowed the material and the force of wind to freely compose movement. The dance of time in this moment captured is improvised and organic. I also used a lamp light to increase detail and definition as well as create shadows which compliments the piece as it is as if the material and it’s shadow dance together. The song that accompanies this moment is called 528 Hz DNA Repair by Miracle tones, Solfeggio Healing Frequencies. I chose this song because of its bittersweet feeling of bliss and melancholy. Its vibrations are slow and dreamy and match with the flow of this piece.
