‘Temporary Being’

I chose to do a 3D-photographic that encapsulates the essence of the human being. I’ve worked with hands many times through my photography, I find them extremely beautiful in the way that  they are unique and can often express the story of that individual. For this piece I have captured my Nan’s hand as her hands to me represent a timeline of her life. My Grandparents have become main subjects for many of my works over the years of exploring photography because of their natural presence and the story that shows in their skin. As their Granddaughter, there is an intense need to hold onto time with them, to cherish every moment and to store these memories, because I deeply love them. The very notion of this is somewhat fragile when we think about it; this desperation we have to hold onto the people, memories and moments we love. Time is forever moving and there is something truly bittersweet about it. Through my concept, I find the weight of this feeling to be very present, similar to the weight of the moment that is held through this medium. But they are only so very fleeting as the weightlessness of time continues to move forward. This 3D-photographic connects with my final work this year as I have focused much on capturing the essence of the being through cropped photographs of the body in motion. I created this piece with natural window lighting and a small lamp light to illuminate the shadow behind the hand and increase definition and detail of the skin. I feel that the choice of a 3D-photographic for this piece further encapsulates the very essence of my Nan in a way that a photograph can’t. This piece breathes on its own and there is a feeling of aliveness to the hand that seems not too far away.
