‘Passing By’

This gif explores the natural passing of time through self-performance of simply walking by. This scene was set with a tripod, in the same location I photographed for my photographic series and same subject – white linen dress. Throughout my work this year there has been a focus on the white dress because of the way it expresses movement through walking, jumping etc. These small details of delicate movement hold shape and create a moment. This is what I am aiming to explore and express through my work. ‘Passing By’ is simple but an honest moment of time and movement. A moment that I was a part of. By walking forward to the left side of the camera, there is this metaphorical idea that I am walking back into the past continuously because of the GIF effect. This idea came to me as the GIF is essentially a replay of a photographic moment on continuous loop. Photography and videography allows us to capture and hold onto moments. It is often human nature to want to hold onto the past, therefor the motions of walking forward into the past on repeat expresses the innate need to continue to revisit and hold onto the past as time is forever moving. My setup was very simple with natural morning light and the natural landscape of my grandparents beautiful property. There is a sense of my own attachment I have to filming and photographing in this space as I grew up here and I too want to hold onto these memories and moments. I aimed for the simplicity because I felt it best fit with my idea of capturing the raw moment and I believe there is so much you can ‘see’ if you look deeper.
