GERONIMO MAUSOLEUM

Originally an alteration turned into a complete reconstruction, the Geronimo Mausoleum was originally a small tomb that allowed no movement inside, both air flow and user due to its unmaximized spaces and lack of passive cooling strategies. This resulted in heat gain and discomfort to its users, preferring to stay outside and resorting to putting up a tent beside it every All Saints day.

To resolve these issues, a re-planning and manipulation of this small space was done, along with the incorporation of full length operable windows and ceiling fans to allow maximum natural air ventilation. Vertical grilles were also installed to create shading and minimize heat gain inside the building. As a highlight, a cross shaped skylight was designed to illuminate and create light streaks around the space, without causing too much heat to enter. Lastly, its designers incorporated a contrast of white and wood finishes, to create a clean yet intimate and homey atmosphere, deciding that mausoleums are also for the living, not just the dead.
