CRIBO - create with cubes.
2019-2020, Porto. Portugal
“CRIBO” is the name given to the object created within the scope of the Artistic Aptitude Test, whose theme was Roots and the sub-theme had to do with my childhood memories, directly related to the Japanese wooden puzzles that my father brought from a business trip to Japan. These puzzles, having different levels of difficulty, are made of wood and the main objective is disassembling the object completely and being able to assemble it, being considered of great difficulty. This allowed me to get inspired in other toys and on the work of great designers like Charles and Ray Eames.
Started by developing sketches regarding traditional and common games, that I and my family played when we were little and also in games, like Tetris, outdoor games, and others. But after exploring the Japanese puzzle I went for creating new pieces inspired by the cube.
Cribo has 5 pieces, 10 cubes, 10 extra cubes, and 20 dowels of each size. Creating with these cubes, allows kids to build more rational forms like houses, people, and animals, but also explore their imagination creating new worlds and spaces where they can play and combine other toys or collections. The cloth bag is used as packaging and also as storage. It was also necessary to put a small instruction pamphlet so that both the child and the parents could read carefully before playing.
Kids over six years start exploring their imaginary worlds and with this toy, they are also able to develop concentration and agility skills, but also modularity and constructive principles.
Cribo stands for a combination of two Portuguese words: criança (kid) and cubo (cube). The collections are based on changes in the colors’ placings, the sizes, and even the materials to softer ones for babies and smaller kids and create a virtual app so they could play it everywhere, and share their worlds with others.
