LIVING WITH RUINS
It is common to see ancient ruins and elements are re-purposed by the inhabitant throughout the centuries in the region around Aydin and Manisa, in Turkey. Different people and different cultures are connected through this continuation and the unique landscape of the region. Though, process of conservation has become worrysome. People living in this unique setting are not allowed to repair and maintain their houses, due to the strict conservation laws, which only aim ancient ruins, but not the unique collages of traditional houses and ancient elements. We made a series of fields trips to Turkey with TU Wien, Institute of Building History to take a detailed look at the situation. Besides lectures and visits to landmarks, our team recorded some selected buildings in the village of Karpuzlu.
