My Work During August

My work in August
This month was very digital, which means I almost didn't do anything handmade.

Actually most of these digital compositions start as sketches for future paintings or collages but the possibilities given by a computer always ended up making me to forget their initial purpose. I know sooner or later they will find their way to a physical art work....
but I still have to define the terms in which this conversation between digital and material can happen.

This first one started with a painted cardboard full of texture and nuances of flesh tones. Later, digitally, I added some light spots and geometric shapes, which its stiffness and artificiality pushed forward the difference between the digital touches and the handmade background.
The several studies on computer are supposed to inspire me on how to keep going with this in the real world. However, this light effects are not easily rendered on cardboard and its translation to paper will never be easy and literal.
This is still ongoing...

Here I got a motif from a collage in process and used it to create a pattern, something not very common in my practice.
Although it is basically a symmetrical work, the numbers can also be seen as a bureaucratic way to call the attention to different spots. They give some singularity to different areas and go against the idea of pattern.
The darker triangles at both ends also put a limit on the pattern and avoid it to look adrift.

As it can be seen above, most of my collages feature clean edges and straight lines and not so much of intricate shapes. I have always liked those bold clashes between materials and colours.
At some point, this collage went in the opposite direction. Everything got blurred and the most of the work consisted in stacking transparent layers looking for the right depth and colour variations.
