The goal of this project was to find interesting features of letterforms by cropping and framing letters into dynamic compositions. A different letterform and typeface was used for each of the six compositions, highlighting the unique characteristics of each type style.
The above letterform belongs to the typeface Stempel Garamond. Stempel Garamond is an Old Style typeface. It has modulated stroke weight and signs of a calligraphic hand with a broad nib pen held at an angle. There’s also an oblique stress and very little contrast.

Baskerville is a transitional typeface. It has a modulated, calligraphic stroke, and the contrast has increased compared to that of Old Style type. Baskerville also has an oblique stress.

Bauer Bodoni is a modern typeface. The modulation of the strokes replicates letterforms written using a pressure-sensitive tool such as a pointed pen, or a brush. Bodoni has high contrast, vertical stress, and ball terminals.

Futura is a geometric sans serif. The letterforms appear to be built from geometric shapes. One can see blunt stroke endings, vertical stress, and very low contrast.

Snell Roundhand is a script typeface with modulated weight through created through pressure of the tool used. Unlike an old style type, the angle at which the tool is held doesn’t affect width, and we’re left with an expansion-type contrast. Snell Roundhand has a high contrast, and we can find places where a ball terminal exists.

Rockwell is a slab serif/Egyptian typeface; this typeface is characterized by its large, unbracketed serifs. There is little to no contrast, and the letters have a vertical stress.
