Employee Wellness Impacts Job Performance

Pennsylvania resident and senior human resources leader Laura Dabkowski helps organizations develop strategies for improving organizational engagement and effectiveness at all levels. To help businesses achieve this goal, Laura Dabkowski consults with companies on how they can use a variety of strategies to promote a positive work culture. For example, research shows that a robust employee wellness program can have a positive impact on a company’s work culture and employee job satisfaction and overall performance.

A 2017 survey conducted by CareerBuilder reported that 60 percent of employees are burned out. This can cause fatigue, sleeplessness, physical pains, high anxiety, and weight gain. All of these factors can negatively impact staff both at work and at home. Fortunately, the human resources organization, SHRM found that 53 percent of businesses want their companies to actively promote a culture of wellness, with 60 percent of employers offering formal wellness programs as of 2017.

According to the Returns on Wellbeing Institute, LLC, encouraging employees to proactively support themselves as well as their peers in reinforcing healthy lifestyle choices can increase positive attitudes overall. In addition, research by Aflac found that 70 percent of employees who participate in wellness programs experience greater job satisfaction than nonparticipants. Thus, strategies that focus on physical wellness facilitate positive employee engagement and increased effectiveness. This improves the overall work environment while demonstrating care and respect to all staff members, which is the ultimate goal.
