MAKE DO & MEND
I was tasked with creating a typographic treatment that represents a New Zealand Entity. I chose to create a design representing the iconic fashion design label NOM*d. Established in 1986 in Dunedin, New Zealand, NOM*d had developed a cult following for it sombre and wearable approach to fashion. The label is known for its screen-printed shirts, reworked vintage garments, traditional tailoring, and knitwear.
I was inspired by interviews of NOM*d’s owner Margarita Robertson talking about her method of collecting clothing and visual assets and recycling them to make new garments and designs. I wanted to incorporate this method into my design process by finding ways to recycle and re-use my visual assets. I used the phrase ‘Make do & Mend’ as it is a mindset reflected in the NOM*d brand and the historic city of Dunedin, known for its noirish gothic aesthetic, underground music, and creative scene.
