The Grace of Bricks

This project aims to examine the potential of different stacking configurations of bricks, in order to construct a religious space for contemplation through different lighting effects.

The proposal made interesting findings on the application of natural and artificial lighting, stacking arrangements, materiality, facade design, proportion and scales through a series of technical drawings and model renderings. The highlight of the chapel aims to provide an inspiring experience to visitors, which starts from the darkest part in entrance, stopped by the plain wall, and then they will attracted by the gradually increased light in the corridor which lead them to the brightest area. The climax of the space is for praying while feel like staying in heaven and surrounded by skylight through the opening from the top. Also, there is a chapel filled with candles, which is surrounded by artificial light. The lighting quality changes from dark to bright through the gradual stacking arrangement of the designated brick.
