Israel Kamakawiwo’ole would have been 61 this year. But he only made it to 38. You might be wondering who da heck this big guy is when all my other portraits are women. Well, this is the guy that sings the “somewhere over the rainbow” song. The one you hear everywhere yet still somehow makes you cry. (Or maybe just me?)

Most people don’t know that the song was not planned. At 3am, IZ decided he needed to get to the recording studio. The studio was shutting down for the night but stayed open for 15 minutes for him to record one take. That’s all he needed. With just a microphone and his ukulele, IZ changed music and he changed Hawaii. What if he had just stayed home that night? Spontaneity can do so much. It’s a good time to be creative.
