I have talked about the difficulties of growing up as a pansexual and gender fluid person. But I’d like to spend the last few minutes of June taking about wonderful experiences. One time, I designed a 20’ parade float complete with a massive “rainbow” made of balloons. And rainbow banners. I found sponsors for the float in an unlikely place - a church! They wanted to make amends with the LGBT community and change their ways.
-
This float was paraded in the Merrie Monarch- the largest Polynesian culture festival in the world. So naturally the float also had Polynesian dancers performing live! Many of these dancers were young girls who had not been exposed to the LGBT community. And people of all ages and colors came up to me during the parade to tell me they had never seen a Pride float in the parade before- in the Rainbow state, no less!
-
So, while I’m social distancing for this pride, I’ve been making art while remembering this story. The rainbow flag and the “women loving women” flag are both represented. Would you like to see more art with flag backgrounds? Maybe the trans and non-binary flags? Let me know what flag art you need to show your pride!
