Cosmoball

Feature film
"Cosmoball
directed by

2071. Galactic wars have destroyed the Moon and changed the climate on the Earth. Now tropical forests are covering Moscow, while New York is iced all over. A huge alien ship towers over Moscow – it is the stadium where spectacular intergalactic Cosmoball competitions take place. The game combines both sport and gladiator fights. When the game is on, the whole world stops in its tracks to watch it. The players are called Athletes, only they are allowed to contest because of their powers and ability to control them. Everyone adores Cosmoball except Anton – a regular guy who wants to find a job to help his family. But once he reveals his powers and gets to the worlds Cosmoball team. Now he’s one of the Athletes. Anton has no idea what special role is destined for him, and that the final game will become the battle for the Earth.
An enormous spaceship hovers over Earth-this is a stadium, which hosts sports events that resemble soccer but at mind-boggling speeds. The name of the game is cosmoball.

Our Trehmer Film team did about 150+ shots mostly fullCG or integrating live action actors on a green screen to a CG environments. Working tightly in partnership with Main Road Post company we were exchanging with assets and renders. We also did develop a lot of design concepts of ship-stadium-interiors. Enjoy what we invented at first before starting any shots production.
Concept Arts
Modeling&Layouting
Before starting modeling we were expecting that style and overall look are done. But as we were diving more and more into building the assets we realized that lots of design researches were waiting us ahead.
at some point we even returned back to sketching stage for better understanding of some elements
even secondary elements in those corridors were paid a lots of attention
Lookdev
Since the geometry was ready we moved to a next step. Lookdev. We spent hour\days\weeks playing with shaders and light rigs searching for unique look and trying to keep us in production timing. Insane mix of all kind of render methods like SSS, indirect light, speculars and glossy reflections at the same time were killing any render engine at any render farm giving us 10-30hrs\frame at a single node.

Machine Hall
There was another absolutely separated self-consitance task. The one-shot-location.

There we tons of conceptual ideas. Here is the final and approved one after a weeks of brain storm of how-to.
Early version of previz while thinking how to show a huge scale chamber.
We split it into a parts and assembled in one instancing those elements.
Enjoy the final result
Infection FX
Procedural root\veins generator.
Infection FX lookdev
Cloudscape
We had a challenge of a several sky battle sequences and we started from building a clouds library.
one of test render frames trying to match CG cloud to a photo
We layouted and rendered about 100 cloudscape shots and provided this background for Main  Road Post and Algous Studio to do the final comp.
Pure Renders
Spreadsheets - 1/3 of all CG cloudy shots
And this are the final comps.
Shots kindly provided by Main Road Post.
