New Dilophosaurus

Dilophosaurus wetherilli, with an updated crest shape and hypothetical (albeit highly probable) feathers.

Dilophosaurus has been known to science since the 1940s, but has been poorly understood, thanks in part to some known specimens collecting dust in storage. But this year (2020), a team of paleontologists led by Dr. Adam Marsh examined some old fossil fragments and found, among other things, that dilophosaurus' iconic crest was larger than we previously thought. The team also found that dilophosaurus had stronger jaws than we previously believed, meaning that maybe it wasn't just a scavenger.

I noticed several pieces of dilophosaurus art inspired by these new findings on social media and so I decided to create one of my own. I had drawn one in Sharpie back in 2017 so I decided to make this a redraw of an old piece. I'm saying this as someone who loves Jurassic Park, but the 2017 version looks more in line with those films with the tiger stripes and lack of feathers. In the 2020 version I decided to go the opposite direction by adding feathers, using cassowaries for inspiration. The dinosaur itself was drawn with Sharpie markers, Micron pens, and a white Gelly Roll pen with some adjustments done in Photoshop. Everything else was added in Photoshop.

It was a fun personal project.
