Stair Investigations

The use of the staircase extends beyond its assigned passage from lower to higher terrain. It is a point of meeting, a point of rest, a point of deliberating and also a point of transition from one space into another. This notion of ' a transition from one place to another' extends beyond the physical and becomes a metaphoric gesture as well with many using the stairs as a means of pausing from their typical course of action and drawing attention onto themselves. The stairs become a seat in many of these instances with the space between two steps equating to a comfortable sitting position. This new mode of engagement with the architecture facilitates a rewiring of what the structure actually serves as- it is not only a mode of journeying from lower ground to higher ground but also serves as a point of rest to journey within ones self. Through my investigations I have focused on how the staircase allows the individual to become more 'present' by analysing the contrast between the fleeting time that is takes the average individual to ascend/descend the staircase and the average period of time that a 'resting' person spends on the stairs and whether that amount of resting time is influenced by the presence of others.
