Scented Candle
A candle is seen by name as a symbol of hope, life and a continued light source when all other lights fade into the dark. The client had a great love for candles ever since he was a child. Wanted to express that love and share a lecture on it. He asked for a small animation to be created of a candle being lit wick by wick but also how each flame if not continually fed dies out in the end. He actually had a candle he wanted to be based off of the fact. Therefore the designer began to put together what the client was already seeing in he's head.
Part One
Like any good beginning to a movie scene one begins with text or in this case sketches. Since he client already knew what candle he wanted to have in the main frame, it was just a matter of sketching how the steps would go in the animation. As such eight square frames were laid out and segment by segment the process was put into play as to how the match would come in, the order of how it touch each little flame and so on.
Digital Age
From the paper sketch, the project branch outward into the digital age. Since color wasn't specific the designer played around with the idea of two different colors, trying to see which was best for convey the idea of an actual candle. Than work was focused on the flame of the actually match, images after images was look at with the design of a flame at the end of a match. This progress was good and a first real animation effect was born.
Animation Effect
The next round of drafts, picked a solid one color. Put three wicks on the wax and played around with the design of the wicks themselves. Feedback from peers put the shape of the flame to an actual flame and not a toadstool mushroom. The color of the wicks also wasn't a favorite as most people where used to seeing a black wick. Unless it was white up to the black portion. These ideas where taken into account and another draft was put together.
This next round of testing worked out very well. Depth was added to the actual container the flames became actual looking flames and the black color wicks against the wax contrasted well. The client was pleased with the end results said it was the simple design he was hoping to get at the end of the day.

The animation was just what he needed for he's lecture, displaying the quick but simple measure of a match in how it can light a candle and keep the scent going round.
