Design Background
—
The existing wire made drying rack was not able to offer the users ease of use and functionality. Besides its cheap look, mounting of the rack to the hangers was so hard that required a lot attention. Not offering any function other than a flat surface to put items on, the existing product couldn’t bring value to make difference.
Opportunities
—
How to questions were asked to discover possible problem descriptions in a dynamic and stimulative way. By doing so, upcoming ideation step was enriched.
Design Exploration
—
The morphological chart was useful to systematically organize the ideas on various sub functions that were determined. By selecting and combining some of the sub functions, the possible solutions were examined.
Concept Generation
—
After considering the existing patents, manufacturability and material aspects, I decided to focus on the most promising features which are 3d polygonal surface, easy mount hangers, foldable item holders.
Development
—
The features were improved by trying out different alternatives in form and detail. Physical models helped me to test and develop the solutions in terms of ergonomics.

The cad devolopment of the rack. Different holders and general form alternatives were evaluated.
Final Product
—
The 3Drack® drying rack is an innovative accessory with its unique up and down bottom design which provides a better drying performance by minimizing the touch points of delicate items and giving more room for the air. The new design allows easy mounting of the rack to the machine. The hangers on the sides have large hollows and height for reference to guide the user for a comfortable placement. The reference height prevents user from accidentally missing the hollows. Another feature of 3D rack is the folding holders that can be easily installed by assembly line worker, thanks to the U shape fitting detail. By being in harmony with the filter, the grill pattern of 3Drack supports the common design language among parts.
