Eight Common Food Allergies, Affect Millions Americans

Based in Chicago, Lucas Chapman is the regional director of operations at Cresco Labs, which makes foods containing cannabidiol (CBD). Formerly an executive in the restaurant industry, Lucas Chapman holds a ServSafe Allergens certificate.

It is estimated that between 26 and 32 million Americans have food allergies, most of them children. Scientists have identified eight food groups that cause nearly all adverse reactions, such as shock, restricted breathing, hives, dizziness, and dangerously low blood pressure.

Children eventually outgrow some of the most common allergies. Many eventually lose their sensitivity to eggs and wheat by age 12.

Various nuts can pose problems. Examples include peanuts and so-called tree nuts, which generally include walnuts, Brazil nuts, cashews, almonds, hazelnuts, and pistachios. Peanuts are part of the legume family (lentils, beans, and peas), but having a reaction to peanuts does not increase the chance of becoming allergic to other legumes.

Another legume, soybeans, is another allergy often seen in children. Again, the chance of becoming sensitive to soybeans us not increased by sensitivity to peanuts or other legumes.

Allergies from marine sources are quite common, and often present for the first time in adulthood. They fall into two groups: finned fish (often tuna, halibut, and salmon) and shellfish (mollusks and crustaceans). An allergy to one group does not necessarily require avoiding the other.

Finally, reactions to a common ingredient in many foods has become more common in the past 20 years, causing experts to suggest that sesame seeds should be added to the list of foods that appear on warning labels.
