For our BFA senior thesis project, we were instructed to choose a community that we do not belong to, and use design to create a solution for a problem. In the past few years, my grandmother has developed Alzheimer’s. I have seen the effects of this disease on her, my mom, family and her other two children. Alzheimer’s diagnoses have rapidly been increasing worldwide. It has affected and is currently affecting thousands of people and their families. I chose to focus on the adult children of parents with Alzheimer’s.
The goal of my design is to focus on aid and support for families dealing with this disease. Through a comforting and empathetic color pallet, as well as relatable type cards about the struggle, I will show this community that they are not alone. These designs will also spread awareness for those that do not understand how hard it is to have a parent who has developed Alzheimer’s. The slow decline of one’s parent affects them mentally, physically and emotionally. I will show that these adult children need support, love, and a helping hand. Many of us cannot imagine watching a loved one slowly decline mentally such that they begin to forget who their family is, when to eat, when to use the bathroom, when it is time to sleep, who their spouse is, and sadly who their own children are.
